We took it easy on our last island day. A lazy breakfast, a little World Cup watching, and a few good hikes. During the Civil War, BHI was the home for a Confederate fort, Fort Holmes. It’s purpose was keeping the Port of Wilmington open, while the US attempted to blockade it. Most of the earthenwork fort is gone now. But, you can still hike along its outline.
After exploring the remains of Ft. Holmes, we visited a tract of beach on the ocean side. We happened across a freighter who was going out to sea.
Hushpuppy took the middle image. I like it.
We packed, let Puppy take a good nap, and headed to “the Club” for dinner. Dinner was surprisingly good- and the service and company was exceptional. Hushpuppy wrapped up his stay with a romp on the driving range.
Bald Head, we will be back.
